Sister Stanislaus Poehnelt

Sister Stanislaus Poehnelt, a Sister of Mercy of the Holy Cross, died Dec. 19 in Merrill, Wis. She was 96.
The Wisconsin native entered religious life at the age of 15. She professed vows in 1933 and spent 77 years in ministry. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education from the Catholic University of America and received a principal’s certificate from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
Sister Stanislaus was a teacher and principal at St. John the Evangelist School in Deer Park from 1934-45, 1946-48, 1960-63, and was principal and superior from 1966-72. She retired to Bell Tower Residence in Wisconsin in1990.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Wisconsin on Dec. 23. Interment followed in St. Francis Cemetery in Merrill.
