A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Irenaea McGannon, was celebrated Jan. 25 in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the congregation’s motherhouse. Sister Mary Irenaea, 90, died Jan. 20 at Mother Margaret Hall.
A native of Columbus, Sister Mary Irenaea studied business at Xavier University. She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 67 years. Sister Mary Irenaea ministered in the dioceses of Cincinnati and Denver as a nurses aide and in housekeeping. She moved to the Sisters of Charity motherhouse in 1946. From 1955-70 she worked in the nutrition department at Mount St. Joseph, when the kitchen was responsible for the college students, the infirmary patients and the motherhouse residents.
Sister Mary Irenaea served as motherhouse sacristan in 1970. For the next eight years, she provided a variety of support services at the motherhouse. In 1989 she retired to join the Sisters of Charity ministry of prayer.
She is survived by her brother, Harry McGannon. Interment was in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
