Sister Edith Soergel
A Mass of Christian Burial for Franciscan Sister Edith Soergel was celebrated July 1 at the motherhouse chapel of Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, Ind. Sister Edith, 82, died June 27 at St. Clare Hall, the congregation’s healthcare facility.
A native of New Albany, Ind., she entered the Oldenburg Franciscan community in 1944 and professed her final vows in 1950. Sister Edith was a teacher and principal in elementary education for 44 years. In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, she ministered at the former Our Lady of Presentation School. She also taught at many schools in Indiana. From 1990-98 she was involved in family home care, with the Council on Aging, and bereavement and parish ministry. She retired to the Oldenburg motherhouse in 1998.
Sister Edith is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Hancock, Theresa Hulsman and Mary Soergel, and brothers, Joseph, Edward and Robert. Interment was in the congregation’s cemetery.
