Pilgrimage in Ohio
In conjunction with the National Eucharistic Revival, Catholics are invited to participate in a statewide pilgrimage, concluding with a Vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Carey, OH, on Wednesday, August 14.
Statewide Eucharistic pilgrimages at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey are nothing new. In fact, these journeys began more than a century ago.
“It was on May 24, 1875, that the first procession brought the statue of Our Lady from French Town to Carey, where the statue was dedicated and enshrined,” said Bishop Daniel Thomas of the Diocese of Toledo.
Brother Randy Kin, OFM Conv, the Minister of Hospitality at Our Lady of Consolation, said a remarkable event made the first procession miraculous.
“It was during this procession that the first sign of the [Blessed Virgin’s special intercession was revealed] for all who were to pray in this little church,” said Brother Kin. “As the procession marched, a severe storm raged in the entire area. Though the faithful could see the rain pouring down on all sides of them for the entire seven-mile walk, not a drop touched the statue of Our Lady of Consolation nor anyone in the procession.”

During the August 14 pilgrimage, the full day’s events include Mass, confession, a Novena of the Assumption with Rosary Procession, a candlelight rosary procession from the Basilica to Shrine Park, then a closing Vigil Mass of the Assumption in the park. More information about the pilgrimage is found at ohiocathconf.org/pilgrimage. “I hope that many parishes, schools and, particularly, youth groups throughout the Buckeye State will send representatives to participate in this historic pilgrimage, bringing back to their own communities the zeal and enthusiasm which they are sure to encounter in the Lord and with His mother Mary,” said Bishop Thomas.
For those unable to attend the pilgrimage but interested in visiting Our Lady of Consolation, Brother Kin says all are gladly received.
“Our Lady of Consolation offers a number of special events throughout the year,” said Brother Kin. “All are welcome at any time on their journey to faith, hope and healing.”
