Sister Janice Ernst

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Janice Ernst was celebrated June 15 in the motherhouse chapel. Sister Janice, 83, died June 11. She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 63 years.

A native of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Sister Janice grew up in Springfield. She was an educator for 35 years, serving as executive director of the Ohio Association of Student Councils for four of those years. In the archdiocese, she taught at Cure of Ars, St. Saviour, Resurrection and St. Jude in the Cincinnati area, and Catholic Central High in Springfield.

She went on to serve as a chaplain. In her retirement years, she volunteered as a receptionist at DePaul Cristo Rey High School.

Sister Janice is survived by her sisters, Connie Simmons and Mary Ann Yurkanin, and brother, Greg. Interment was in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.

Sister Mary Ellen Barrette

A Mass of Christian Burial for Glenmary Sister Mary Ellen Barrette was celebrated June 12 at St. Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro, Ky.

Sister Mary Ellen, 87, died June 4. A native of Vermont, Sister Mary Ellen had been a missionary for 63 years as member of her community, which was originally established in the archdiocese
in 1941.

She served the home missions in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas, and Missouri. Sister Mary Ellen is survived by her sister, Peggy Alexander, and her brother, George.

Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery in Owensboro.

Father Edward Jach

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marianist Father Edward Jach was celebrated June 14 at Queen of Apostles Chapel, Mount St. John, Dayton.

Father Jach, 86, died June 14. A Milwaukee native, Father Jach professed first vows in the Society of Mary (Marianists) in 1950, perpetual vows in 1955, and was ordained in 1964. He graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He later received a master’s degree in Christian spirituality from Creighton University in 1976.

During his years in ministry, Father Jach served as a teacher, school chaplain, pastor, and dedicated many years to Marianist formation.

In 1990, Father Jach was assigned to St. Francis de Sales Parish in Cincinnati, where he served as pastor for 20 years. In 2010, Father Jach began his path to retirement with a sabbatical in Texas before taking on the chaplaincy for the Siena Woods healthcare center in Dayton,

Interment was in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Mount St. John.

Sister Loretto Burke

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Loretto Burke was celebrated July 12 in the motherhouse chapel. Sister Loretto, 96, died July 2.

She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 78 years. A native of Parkersburg, W.Va., Sister Loretto was a music educator for 30 years in elementary, high school and college.

In the archdiocese, she taught at St. Lawrence and Marian High School in Cincinnati. In 1972, Sister Loretto moved into administrative roles at the College of Mount St. Joseph, ministering there for the next 27 years. Her responsibilities included assistant dean, music department chair, weekend college and director of institutional advancement from 1985-1999.

Interment was in the Sisters of Charity Cemetery.

Sister Annina Morgan

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Annina Morgan was celebrated July 16 in the motherhouse chapel. Sister Annina, 102, died July 8.

She was a sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 84 years.

A native of Alpena, Mich., Sister Annina was a teacher and principal for 34 years, serving in Michigan, Colorado and Ohio.

While in Michigan, Sister Annina was called to pastoral ministry. She served as co-pastor of St. John’s, the parish center for Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Sister Annina went on to serve her community as personnel director, and later as the director of the Adult Women’s Center at the College of Mount St. Joseph. She later became director of retreat programs at the motherhouse.

Interment was in the Sisters of Charity Cemetery.
