Local Presentation Highlights Papal Outreach to Near East
Are you interested in learning more about the Church’s efforts to minister to people in the war-torn areas of Ukraine, Israel and Palestine? Are you familiar with the Church’s work to aid people facing economic, environmental, political and social challenges in countries across Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southern Asia? Monsignor Peter Vaccari, the president of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) – the Church’s outreach to Eastern Rite Catholics in struggling communities throughout the Near East – will present “CNEWA: An Initiative of Healing and Hope” at Xavier University on Monday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.
An instrument of love & sign of hope
Monsignor Vaccari was elected president of the CNEWA in 2019, after serving seven years as the rector of St. Joseph Seminary in Dunwoodie, NY. Under his leadership, CNEWA has responded to many needs and crises, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Founded in 1926 by Pope Pius XI as part of the Papal Mission Society, CNEWA’s mission is to support faith, provide continued relief and bring hope to the vulnerable who are scattered throughout the historic lands of the ancient Church. The organization has expanded its ministry to countries including Ethiopia, Lebanon, Ukraine, Iraq, Syria, India, Palestine and Israel.
