CINCINNATI, OHIO, January 17, 2024) Archbishop Moeller High School proudly announces the appointment of Jonathan Hayes as Moeller’s new athletic director, effective January 29, 2024. With a rich background as an athlete, coach, and general manager, Jonathan will bring a wealth of expertise and passion to Moeller’s athletic programs.

Jonathan joins Moeller with a proven track record of fostering excellence on and off the field. His dedication to athletes’ holistic development and his work with nationally recognized charities align perfectly with Moeller’s Mission and values. He aims to cultivate athletic prowess and emphasize character-building and academic achievements. “As an athlete, a Moeller parent, and someone with a deep dedication to my faith, I couldn’t think of a better way to dedicate my talents than to work with student-athletes and live out Moeller’s Mission. I look forward to working with the Moeller Family and continuing the winning tradition at Moeller,” said Hayes.

Hayes was most recently the offensive coordinator for the 2023 XFL champion Arlington Renegades. Before that, Hayes was head coach and general manager of the St. Louis Battlehawks, where he assembled a coaching and support staff for the startup league. He was also a member of the Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff as the tight-ends coach from 2003 to 2018. During that time, the Bengals made seven playoff appearances and won four AFC North championships. Hayes started his coaching career with the University of Oklahoma as the special teams coordinator, tight-ends coach, halfbacks coach, and tackles coach from 1998-2002. During his tenure, the team won two Big 12 championships, three bowl games, and the national championship in 2000.

He attended the University of Iowa as a four-year letter athlete and All-American honors awardee and was a team captain in his senior year. He made four bowl game appearances. Hayes was selected in the second round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1994, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, appearing in eight playoff games, three AFC championship games, and Super Bowl XXIX.

Hayes has been part of many organizations and charitable foundations, including the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the advisory board of the International Diabetic Center, Camp Shawnee, president and founder of Hayes Huddle, Chiefs Core, and Fellowship Christian Athletes.

“Jonathan’s enthusiasm for Moeller and our student-athletes is a combination that makes him a perfect fit to be the athletic director at Moeller. His high expectations will help elevate the athletic office to be a best-in-class organization focusing on the student-athletes and the entire Moeller Family,” said Moeller president Marshall Hyzdu ’96.

Jonathan assumes the position previously held by Interim Athletic Director Frank Russo, who will remain a senior associate athletic director in the department.
