Gibbons appointed permanent superintendent of archdiocesan schools
Dayton native Susan M. Gibbons has been appointed Director of Educational Services and Superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr confirmed the appointment of Gibbons Friday.
“Susan Gibbons has devoted her entire career to Catholic education in our Archdiocese,” said Archbishop Schnurr. “She will be a steady hand as Superintendent, just as she was as Interim Superintendent, insuring that the strong forward movement of our schools will continue.”
The appointment followed a national search for a replacement for former Superintendent Dr. Jim Rigg, who resigned Oct. 2, 2015, to accept an appointment as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Gibbons had served as interim superintendent since Rigg’s resignation.
“It is my honor and privilege to serve the Archdiocese of Cincinnati as the Superintendent of Catholic Schools,” Gibbons said. “Together, we will continue our mission of excellence in Catholic education.”
Gibbons is a graduate of archdiocesan schools and earned her M.A. in education at Xavier University, Cincinnati. She earned her undergraduate degrees in mathematics, French and secondary education at the University of Mount St. Joseph.
She became an assistant superintendent of schools in 2010 after serving as President and Principal at Seton High School since 1997. She had held a number of administrative positions at Seton, where she joined the staff as a math teacher in 1980, before becoming principal. She was also a math and French teacher at Alter High School, of which she was a graduate.
