Adult Spirituality Institute announces upcoming courses

ARCHDIOCESE — The Adult Spirituality Institute, now in its ninth year, has announced its upcoming courses. The short term, non-credit courses and seminars are offered in conjunction with, and held at, the Athenaeum of Ohio.

The mission of the institute is to foster ongoing spiritual development by providing courses and events centered on Scripture and theology presented by outstanding Athenaeum and regional scholars. Enrichment and enjoyment are the goals. People of all ages and religions who wish to further their spiritual development in light of the Catholic faith tradition are invited to attend.

Beginning on Mondays from Sept. 14-Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-12, Father Tim Schehr, professor of biblical studies at the Athenaeum, will present “A Way Out of Egypt,” which will take a closer look the passages in Exodus, looking for spiritual lessons to the apply on the journey each one of us must take out of the places that hold us captive.

On Thursdays, from Oct. 29-Nov. 19, 7-9 p.m., Jesuit Father Theodore Ross, an assistant professor of historical theology at the Athenaeum, will present “Sinners and Saints in the Early Church,” which will focus on the great people of the primitive church whose struggles and conditions have given us our Catholic faith.

During the 2010 spring/winter session, the institute will offer “Looking for God,” by Father Schehr, Mondays, Jan. 11-Feb. 1, 10 a.m.-noon; “Healing and Reconciliation in the Church Today,” by Father Earl Fernandes, Thursdays, March 4-25, 7-9 p.m.; and “Approaching God in Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castle,” by Gillian Ahlgren, Mondays, April 12-May 3, 10 a.m.-12.  The cost for each course is $40, or $160 for all five.
