Obituary: Br. Reynolds Garland, OFM
Br. Reynolds Garland, OFM, passed away on Nov. 30, 2023, at the age of 89 at Twin Towers Senior Living Community in Cincinnati, Ohio. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Br. Reynolds was born on Jan. 13, 1934, to Alex and Willetta Garland.
Br. Reynolds entered the Franciscan Order on Aug. 15, 1952; professed simple vows on Aug. 16, 1953a; and made his solemn profession on Aug. 16, 1956. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 13, 1961, at St. Leonard in Centerville, Ohio. Over the years, Br. Reynolds’ ministry included serving as an instructor, chaplain and counselor at Roger Bacon High School and treasurer at St. Francis Seraph in Cincinnati. He also served as associate pastor at St. Clement Parish in Cincinnati, while also ministering as a child psychologist with Catholic Charities. Br. Reynolds went on to minister as a chaplain at the Hansen’s Disease Center in Carville, Louisiana; associate pastor at Our Lady of the Rosary and Holy Rosary/St. Lucy in Houma, Louisiana; and as a parish priest at Holy Cross Friary in Jackson, Kentucky. He had most recently served as a chaplain at Mercy Community at Winton Woods in Cincinnati. Br. Reynolds celebrated the 70th anniversary of his simple profession in 2023, expressing his gratitude to God for his Franciscan vocation. He was known for his love for animals and playing golf.
Br. Reynolds is survived by his sister, Anne Dore, and brother, Pete, the friars of the Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe, including classmate Br. Bruce Hausfeld, OFM, and friends. Funeral services for Br. Reynolds will be held at St. Clement Church, 4536 Vine St., St. Bernard (Cincinnati), Ohio 45217, beginning with reception of his body and remembrances at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7. The funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial at St. Mary Cemetery in St. Bernard.
