CATHEDRAL DEANERY — As Holy Cross-Immaculata Church in Mt. Adams nears the end of its sesquicentennial jubilee as a parish, the parish celebrated a special Mass Sept. 12 to honor the 99 years that the Sisters of Charity devoted to the Catholic community of Mt. Adams.

 
The Mass was followed by the dedication of a statue of Mother Elizabeth Seton, the foundress of the Sisters of Charity. Life-long parishioner Sister Cookie Crowley was also honored as she celebrated her 50th anniversary as a Sister of Charity.

In 1970 the two parishes of Holy Cross (the Irish parish) and Immaculata (the German parish) were merged into one new parish called Holy Cross-Immaculata. The Sisters of Charity, founded in Cincinnati in 1852, served at both parishes.  They served at Immaculata from 1877-1976, where they conducted the elementary school from 1877-1946 and conducted Immaculata Commercial High School from 1946 -1959.  The Sisters served at Holy Cross from 1888-1976.

“The Sisters of Charity gave such important service to the Catholic community of Mt. Adams for 99 years, yet we never properly thanked them,” said Father Martin O. Moran, pastor. “This statue is our way of memorializing their years of dedication.” The statue was donated by parishioners Leon and Jean Loewenstine.
