Despite trailing most of the Division III boys state semifinal basketball game, the Chaminade Julienne Eagles mounted a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to get within three points of Lima Central Catholic, but the Thunderbirds managed to hold on for a 55-50 victory Thursday night at the Jerome Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University.

Chaminade Julienne was led in scoring by senior Myo Baxter-Bell with 18 points. The Eagles were making their seventh state tournament appearance and were the last school from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati still in contention for a state basketball championship this season.

OHSAA to honor late Roger Bacon coach
The OHSAA Naismith Awards are presented to two people for their meritorious service to the sport of basketball or interscholastic athletics. One of this year’s recipients to be honored during the state tournament is the late Bill Brewer.

Brewer was the boys basketball coach for 14 years at Roger Bacon and Princeton before dying of a heart attack at the age of 42 in November 2007. While at Roger Bacon, he led the 2002 team to a 25-3 record and a state title after an upset in the finals over two-time defending champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, which was led by LeBron James.
The other honoree is Jim Cook of Leesburg Fairfield.

Fenwick’s Stegbauer named lineman of the year
Fenwick senior Ben Stegbauer was named the Anthony Munoz Foundation Lineman of the Year at the National Football Federation of Greater Cincinnati chapter annual banquet. The award is given annually to a few select offensive and defensive lineman in the tri-state region.

Beyond their athletic achievements, candidates must demonstrate academic success and community involvement.  Stegbauer is a two-sport athlete, also competing in wrestling and performing in school plays.

Roger Bacon underwater hockey program finishes second
The Spartans high school varsity underwater hockey team finished 5-1 at the 36th annual College Royale Underwater Hockey Tournament March 21 in Canada for a second place finish in the “B” division.

Roger Bacon’s high school squad fell in the gold medal game to the University of Illinois 3-1. The Spartans “B” team finished 1-5 at the tournament.

Roger Bacon has the oldest high school underwater hockey team in the U.S. and have won four national championships.
