Alter girls are state runner up
Millersburg West Holmes earned a 62-45 win over Kettering Archbishop Alter in the OHSAA Division II girls basketball state championship in Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center Saturday, March 15.
This Div. II state title game was decided between two undefeated teams for the first time since 1995, when Roger Bacon defeated Elida. Archbishop Alter entered the title game 29-0 as the Associated Press No. 2 team in the state. Alter ends its season 29-1 with its school’s second state runner-up trophy (2014, 2010).
Alter was led by freshman Libby Bazelak with 16 points and four rebounds.
West Holmes was 23 of 25 at the free throw line. Its 23 made free throws sets a new Div. II championship game record. With Alter shooting 13 of 18 from the free throw line, the combined 34 made free throws in a Div. II championship game sets a new record as well.
DPCR hoops hits milestone
For the first time in its brief history, DePaul Cristo Rey High School has all-conference athletes.
Named First Team All-Conference from the girls basketball team was sophomore Anaya Trapp. Trapp was both the leading scorer and rebounder for the team this season.
On the boys side, junior forward Keion Humphrey was named to the second-team. Humphrey was the top scorer on the men’s team and set a school single-game scoring record with a 30-point game this season.
This was DePaul Cristo Rey’s third basketball season as a member of OVAL; the school opened in 2011.
