Xavier, Dayton Plan Respective Week Of Events To Honor MLK

Xavier University plans a week of events to celebrate the birthday of civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted. Co-sponsored by Xavier’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of Student Involvement, Center for Interfaith Community Engagement, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Career Services Center and Black Student Association.

BSA Presents: Our Friend Martin
CONATON LEARNING COMMONS KENNEDY AUDITORIUM

This is the story of a black teenager named Miles, who has to go on a class field trip to the museum of learning what Martin Luther King Jr. did for humanity; he thinks that he’d rather play baseball. But the trip turns into an exciting adventure when he and his best friend, Randy, are sent back in time meeting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at several points during his life.

Troop 1500 unites daughters with mothers who are serving time for serious crimes, giving them a chance to rebuild their broken bonds. Join us in dialogue as we explore Dr. Martin Luther King’s views on social justice issues surrounding women and girls.

The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., RHS PSI Chapter present — Ivy Prince Boyz II Men: Evolution of a Gentleman.
GALLAGHER STUDENT CENTER THEATER 

The Ivy Prince is a pageant that showcases the talents and contributions of the male students on campus. Tickets $5.

 

Dayton Events

The University of Dayton plans a week of events to celebrate the birthday of civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. beginning Tuesday, Jan. 15. Events are free and open to the public.

“Solidarity: A Day of Words, A Night of Art for Dr. King,”
Presented by ArtStreet and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
UD Speaks, all day, ArtStreet Studio E. Create posters influenced by the words and imagery of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Paint and poster board will be provided to design an inspired message that will be staked into the Humanities lawn along with other campus and community members’ art, creating a collage of original art work.
A Night in ’63 Vinyl Party, 6-8 p.m., ArtStreet Studio D. Dance and groove to the vinyl sounds from the civil rights era including music from Stax Records (Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes) and Motown (Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin). The University’s spoken word organization, UKURI, will perform pieces influenced by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company will showcase a very intimate dance piece for this special evening.
4 Little Girls Film Screening, 8 p.m., ArtStreet Studio B. Spike Lee’s powerful documentary about the notorious bombing of an African-American church in 1963. Hosted by associate professor of religious studies Cecilia Moore.
